MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers is pushing back against threats from the Trump administration regarding immigration policy in state buildings. The tensions arose after Tom Homan, President Trump’s top border adviser, warned Evers that enforcing a memo directing state employees to report federal immigration visits could lead to his arrest.

In a video statement Friday, Evers stated that his administration’s guidance is meant to ensure compliance with both state and federal laws. He emphasized, “Chilling threats like this should be of concern to every Wisconsinite and every American who cares about this country and the values we hold dear.” Evers expressed his commitment to doing the right thing, despite the pressure from federal officials.

The guidance from Evers instructs state workers to consult legal counsel if approached by immigration officers. Homan, during his remarks, suggested that any assistance in harboring undocumented individuals could be treated as a felony. “Wait to see what’s coming,” Homan warned. “You cannot support what we’re doing and you can support sanctuary cities if that’s what you want to do,” he added.

Evers’ firm stance comes in light of a recent Justice Department case involving a Wisconsin county official charged with assisting an undocumented immigrant. This incident reflects growing tensions between state and federal immigration policies, as the Trump administration intensifies its stance.

The governor’s office has yet to receive a formal response from the White House regarding Homan’s statements, leaving room for further developments in this ongoing dispute.
