Bathurst 1000 2024

On the eve of the 2024 edition of the Repco Bathurst 1000, a range of motorsport experts have offered their predictions for the highly-anticipated Great Race. Renowned figures like Mark Skaife, Jess Yates of Fox Sports, and others are tipping their favorites, potential dark horses, and standout rookies.

Mark Skaife is putting his money on Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth, citing their impressive pace and team form throughout the season. “Chaz has some unfinished business this year,” Skaife noted, explaining why he believes they are the car to beat.

Similarly, Jess Yates is backing Broc Feeney and Jamie Whincup, attributing their readiness to the seasoned experience Whincup brings and Feeney’s relentless preparation since his heartbreak last year. Yates remarked, “Broc and Jamie had really fast cars at Sandown. I think this is going to be their year.”

Mark Beretta from Seven favors Matty Payne and Garth Tander, describing them as a “very hard combo to beat,” while Matt White of SEN is advocating for Cam Waters and James Moffat, citing Moffat’s competence and Waters’ track expertise as significant advantages.

The experts have also identified dark horses that fans should keep an eye on. James Golding and Dave Russell receive notable mention from Skaife and Yates after their podium finish at Sandown, due to their continual improvement as a team.

Moreover, the rookie to watch according to Skaife and several others is Cooper Murray, particularly after his notable performance at Sandown alongside veteran Craig Lowndes. Riana Crehan points out Aaron Cameron as another rookie surprise, commenting on his composed and fast performance.

The tension isn’t limited to who might win the race, as the season’s dynamics between the Bathurst 1000 and the Supercars championship unfold. Championship leader Will Brown faces a strategic choice between securing the prestigious race win or solidifying his championship lead. With only 189 points separating him from Chaz Mostert and a further 222 from teammate Broc Feeney, his approach could significantly impact his standing.

Additionally, parity issues between Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang remain a talking point, despite solutions being implemented for aerodynamic balance. Concerns about the new engine maps, which aim to address differentials in power output and torque, add another layer of intrigue ahead of the race.

This year’s race strategy has also been influenced by new rules requiring full-time drivers to start the endurance races, aiming to manage the race’s dynamics and avoid the early chaos often caused by less experienced drivers.
