Eric Puchner Author Interview

Johns Hopkins University, MD — In a recent interview, Eric Puchner, chair of the Writing Seminars department, discussed his latest novel, Dream State, chosen by Oprah Winfrey for her book club. The novel dives into heavy themes, including trauma and the complexities of human existence, drawing readers into the intricate world he has created.

Puchner’s experience as a graduate adviser at Johns Hopkins shaped his approach to the novel. Reflecting on how he introduced the concept of cross-country skiing to a skeptic, he likened it to the challenging themes in his writing. ‘Good fiction holds a mirror to life,’ he stated. ‘That’s what I aim for in Dream State. It’s about all the things that make us human.’

Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement has drawn significant attention to the book, propelling it into the literary spotlight. During a recent podcast appearance on The Oprah Podcast, she related to a particularly harrowing scene where characters struggle with norovirus during a wedding. ‘Coming out of both ends,’ she recalled, calling the depiction ‘terrible’ yet relatable.

Dream State intricately weaves a tale of loss and renewal through a love triangle that spans five decades. The emotional narrative begins on a picturesque estate in rural Montana, disrupted by a stomach virus epidemic that serves as a catalyst for deeper connections among the characters.

‘Time slips by in an almost dreamlike manner for the characters,’ Puchner explained. ‘Chapters flow between decades, bringing a disorienting experience akin to aging itself.’ His intention is to replicate the feeling of life’s unpredictable passage, evoking how swiftly time can alter one’s reality.

Readers have responded to the novel’s darker moments, grappling with themes such as dementia and addiction. Puchner acknowledged that critics often label his work as ‘too dark.’ ‘But that darkness resonates with some people, as they see their own struggles reflected in the pages,’ he shared. ‘That’s the beauty of literature — to connect.’

Despite varying reactions, he noted a significant number of heartfelt emails from readers who found solace in his writing. ‘It’s rewarding to know that my work has impacted lives,’ he said. ‘The emotional journey I explore often resonates deeply with readers who have experienced similar challenges.’

Puchner also spoke to the inherent difficulties writers face in processing their craft. ‘Talking about writing is a complex task,’ he commented. ‘It’s like trying to define the experience of reading. It’s meant to evoke emotions, not fit into a box of specific themes.’ He encourages understanding that literature reflects life’s messiness, frailty, and beauty.

Ultimately, Dream State serves as a reflection of life’s complexities and the emotional weight of human relationships. Puchner believes that the key to great storytelling lies in authenticity and vulnerability, engaging readers in meaningful discussions about universal experiences.
