Northrop Grumman Explosion Smoke Rising

PROMONTORY, Utah — An explosion rocked a building at the Northrop Grumman facility in Box Elder County early Wednesday morning, causing complete destruction of the structure but fortunately resulting in no injuries, according to the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at 7:38 a.m. at the Northrop Grumman Rocket Garden. Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the explosion, and the sheriff’s office noted that while no one was hurt, that information could change as the investigation progresses.

A video shared by a FOX 13 News viewer showed a significant plume of smoke rising from the scene, with the witness stating the explosion was so powerful it shook her home. In a related clip, the viewer captures the aftermath of the explosion.

Despite the early morning explosion, no shelter-in-place order was deemed necessary for nearby residents due to the facility’s remote location. The sheriff’s office stated that officials have not received reports of any harmful contaminants being released into the air from the smoke.

One official photo provided by the sheriff’s office suggests the building is a total loss. Importantly, it appears that the structure affected was not the facility where Northrop Grumman manufactures solid rocket boosters for national space programs.

As the investigation continues, local authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Community members are encouraged to stay informed through updates from FOX 13 News and related news outlets.
