Kevin Rodriguez Zavala Roller Coaster Accident

ORLANDO, Fla. – The family of 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala is calling for the closure of the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal Orlando, following his death after riding the attraction on September 17. Rodriguez Zavala was found unresponsive shortly after the ride and later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing the family, announced their demand during a press conference on October 6, just days after the roller coaster reopened. Crump stated that the family was not informed about the ride’s reopening and expressed concerns over safety issues similar to those faced by Rodriguez Zavala.

Rodriguez Zavala’s parents and family members voiced their frustration, claiming the ride was reopened too soon without adequately addressing safety concerns. A statement released by the family condemned Universal’s decision, stating, “Universal said the ride was safe, yet news reports show one of the same safety issues that my son experienced just happened again.” They continued, “Until this ride’s restraint system is proven safe, it should not carry another passenger. Kevin’s blood is on Universal’s hands until they do right by him and all riders.”

Medical reports indicate Rodriguez Zavala died from multiple blunt impact injuries, and the medical examiner ruled his death an accident. Crump noted that the restraints of the roller coaster did not lock correctly during Rodriguez Zavala’s ride, an issue that allegedly occurred again after the ride reopened.

Universal Orlando’s president, Karen Irwin, stated that the ride underwent comprehensive reviews and inspections before reopening, asserting that it operates as intended. However, Crump argues that safety measures must be prioritized, stating, “If they’re saying safety is paramount, they should have waited for answers before reopening the ride.”

The family is awaiting autopsy results and intends to explore legal options against the theme park. Crump emphasized their commitment to understanding the circumstances surrounding Rodriguez Zavala’s death and ensuring that no other family endures a similar tragedy. “We cannot get Kevin back, but we can fight to make sure no one else suffers from this,” he added.
