2025 Federal Holidays: Key Dates and Bank Closures Announced
As the new year begins, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has released the 2025 federal holiday schedule, which includes 11 days of observance. Notably, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day both fall on January 20, 2025, creating a unique overlap. Federal offices, banks, and many businesses will close on these dates, impacting millions of Americans.
Major banks, including Bank of America and Citibank, will align with the Federal Reserve‘s holiday schedule, closing their branches on federal holidays. While physical branches will be closed, online banking services and ATMs will remain operational. Key dates include New Year's Day on January 1, Memorial Day on May 26, Juneteenth on June 19, and Thanksgiving on November 27.
In addition to federal holidays, President Joe Biden has declared January 9, 2025, as a day of observance, though it is not listed as a federal holiday. Religious holidays such as Easter (April 20), Ramadan (expected to begin February 28 or March 1), and Hanukkah (starting December 14) will also be celebrated.
Bank of America and Citibank customers are advised to plan ahead for holiday closures. On New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2024, most branches will close early, around 4:00 p.m. local time. Regular banking hours will resume on January 2, 2025.
To avoid disruptions, financial experts recommend withdrawing cash in advance, scheduling payments early, and utilizing digital banking services. Customers should also ensure their account information is up to date to avoid missing important notifications.
Bank of America, founded in 1904 as the Bank of Italy, has a long history of serving communities, particularly during challenging times. Its founder, Amadeo Giannini, famously set up a makeshift bank after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to help locals access their funds.
