First-Time Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol Appointed as Junior Minister in Modi 3.0 Cabinet
First-time Member of Parliament from Pune, Murlidhar Mohol, has been appointed as a junior minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s third-term cabinet. Mohol, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secured victory over Congress‘ Ravindra Dhangekar in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Pune, Maharashtra.
Mohol, a 49-year-old Maratha leader hailing from Pune’s Mulshi tehsil, graduated from Kolhapur University where he also received wrestling training. His political journey began in 2002 when he became a Corporator and later went on to lead the standing committee of the Pune Municipal Corporation before serving as the Mayor in 2019.
Despite a setback in the 2009 Assembly polls from Khadakwasla, Mohol’s consistent efforts in Pune politics have now earned him a ministerial role at the central level under PM Modi’s leadership. The announcement of his appointment has come as a surprise to many as Mohol is relatively new to national politics without prior ministerial experience.
Historically, Pune has seen only two other leaders, Suresh Kalmadi and Prakash Javadekar, represent the city in the Union cabinet. Mohol’s appointment marks a significant development for Pune, positioning him as the third Puneite to hold a central ministerial position. Meanwhile, the BJP’s decision to choose Mohol over other potential candidates like Chhatrapati Udayanraje Bhosale from Satara reflects strategic considerations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Expressing his gratitude towards the BJP leadership for the opportunity, Mohol shared his surprise at the sudden turn of events leading to his cabinet induction. His unexpected elevation to the central ministry underscores the party’s confidence in his abilities and potential to contribute to governance at the national level.
As Mohol gears up to assume his new responsibilities, political analysts speculate on the impact of his appointment on the local political landscape in Pune and Maharashtra. With his strong grassroots connect and administrative experience, Mohol is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the BJP’s strategy and outreach in the region ahead of the upcoming state elections.
The diverse experiences and leadership qualities that Mohol brings to the table signal a shift in the political dynamics of Pune, setting the stage for a renewed focus on development initiatives and governance priorities under the Modi government’s third tenure.
