Former Footballer Fabian Caballero Passes Away at 46
Arsenal Football Club has announced the passing of former player Fabian Caballero, who died at the age of 46. Caballero, who played briefly for Arsenal in the 1998/99 season, was on loan from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño. He made his single Premier League appearance in a home draw against Middlesbrough, while also featuring in cup competitions during his stint with the club.
The Paraguayan footballer returned to his native country after his time with Arsenal, joining Atletico Tembetary and Sol de America, before making a significant move to Dundee in July 2000. Over the following four years, Caballero became a valuable player for the Scottish club, making 142 appearances and scoring 27 goals. Among his notable achievements at Dundee was reaching the 2003 Scottish Cup final and being named the club’s Player of the Season the next year.
Caballero’s career spanned various countries, including stints in South Korea, Cyprus, Chile, Greece, Guatemala, and Argentina, before he retired from professional football in 2014. His sudden demise occurred while playing futsal with friends in Asuncion, Paraguay.
The news of Caballero’s passing was confirmed by the Paraguayan Football Association, which stated, “The Paraguayan Football Association deeply regrets the passing of former footballer, Fabian Caballero, who had an outstanding career both in Paraguayan football and abroad. We accompany the family and friends in this difficult time.”
In a statement, Dundee Football Club expressed its shock and sadness, noting Caballero’s popularity among fans and his contributions to the club. “Fabián signed for The Dee in July 2000 and became a fan’s favourite amongst the Dundee supporters,” said the club, adding that a full tribute would be issued later in the day.
Arsenal also paid tribute to Caballero on social media, stating, “Everyone at the club is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our former player, Fabian Caballero. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.”
