Former Husker Basketball Player Sues University Over Alleged Sexual Misconduct

A former player for the University of Nebraska women’s basketball team, Ashley Scoggin, has filed a lawsuit against the University, Athletics Director Trev Alberts, head coach Amy Williams, and former coach Chuck Love Jr. The lawsuit alleges a hostile educational environment and misconduct.

Scoggin, who played as a guard for the team from 2021 to 2022, claims that Chuck Love Jr., the former associate head coach, engaged in an inappropriate sexual relationship with her. The relationship ended with Scoggin being removed from the team and Love resigning.

According to the lawsuit, Love allegedly started pursuing Scoggin romantically after recruiting her to the team in 2020. The situation escalated when Scoggin began an internship in Love’s office, where he would reportedly invite her out for drinks and make inappropriate advances.

The relationship turned intimate, with Love allegedly demanding sex on school property and during away games. Scoggin claims she felt trapped and feared retaliation if she refused. Teammates eventually discovered the relationship and reported it to Head Coach Amy Williams.

Williams, as per the lawsuit, failed to protect Scoggin’s confidentiality and allowed team members to interrogate both Love and Scoggin. This led to Scoggin feeling ashamed and isolated, ultimately resulting in her suspension from the team and Love’s resignation.

Scoggin’s lawsuit accuses the University of Nebraska, Trev Alberts, and Amy Williams of mishandling the situation, failing to uphold Title IX regulations, and creating a hostile environment for her.

In response to the lawsuit, University of Nebraska Chief Communications Officer Melissa Lee stated that the University intends to vigorously defend itself against the allegations while refraining from commenting on the specifics of the pending litigation.
