Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren to Join BJP
Champai Soren, a senior tribal leader and currently a minister in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government, is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday.
Soren, who previously served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, cited facing ‘bitter humiliation’ in his role, prompting his decision to switch parties. He mentioned that he had met with Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi earlier this week, leading to increased speculation about his impending departure from the JMM.
In his remarks, Soren indicated that he is committed to the development of Jharkhand and the welfare of tribal communities, stating, ‘whatever role the party will give me, I will do it.’
Additionally, Soren expressed concerns about the dangers of Bangladeshi infiltration affecting tribal existence in the state. He emphasized his ongoing struggle for the community and the need for proactive measures.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised allegations that Soren was under surveillance by his own government police for the past five months. This situation has resulted in questioning two Jharkhand Police sub-inspectors who were reportedly monitoring the former chief minister’s activities in Delhi.
Sarma claimed that the order for surveillance originated from ‘a person in a constitutional position,’ without disclosing specific names. He has called for a formal investigation into the matter, noting the serious implications for political conduct in the region.
