Former NHL Player Alex Formenton Turns Himself in to Police in Sexual Assault Investigation
Former National Hockey League (NHL) player Alex Formenton has voluntarily turned himself in to the London, Ontario police regarding an ongoing investigation into an alleged sexual assault by several members of the Canadian world junior team in 2018.
Accompanied by high-profile criminal defense lawyers Daniel Brown and Lindsay Board, Formenton walked into the London Police headquarters on Sunday morning to face charges related to the accusation made in 2018. Formenton’s legal team released a statement asserting his innocence and urging the public not to rush to judgement without considering all the evidence.
The investigation, triggered by a complaint filed by a woman, prompted five members of the 2018 Canadian world junior team to take leaves of absence from their respective professional clubs. Formenton, a former player for the Ottawa Senators who had been playing in Switzerland for HC Ambri-Piotta, was granted an indefinite leave of absence last week to return home to Canada.
The incident in question occurred after a Hockey Canada gala on June 18, 2018, where the Canadian world junior team was being honored for their gold medal win at the world championships. The exact charges against Formenton have not been disclosed.
The London Police have scheduled a news conference on February 5th to provide further information on the case, and they have declined to comment any further at this time.
Alex Formenton, 24, played 109 games for the Ottawa Senators from the 2017-18 season through the 2021-22 season before exploring opportunities overseas.
