Victoria ‘Plum’ Sykes, a British journalist and author, has recently become a topic of discussion on social media after a clip from the early 2000s resurfaced, showcasing her distinctive fashion choices during her time at American Vogue. The video, originating from the 2000 documentary Boss Woman, features Sykes, then in her late twenties, discussing her choice of office attire, which contrasted sharply with the traditional work outfits of the era.

The clip shows Sykes in a white sleeveless tank top paired with a long, floral chiffon skirt by Dolce and Gabbana, black tights, and pointed black heels. Sykes comments on her outfit: “The clothes that people wear here in the day are probably clothes that normal people would wear on their most glamorous night out of the year.” Her remark highlights the dramatic difference in workplace fashion norms between then and now.

The viral video has sparked discussions on social media platforms, include X, formerly Twitter, with users commenting on the evolution of workplace fashion. Some users noted that such chic attire is more commonplace today, whereas Sykes’ ensemble was considered unconventional in 1999, when more formal suits and blazers were the norm.

“Yeah, a chiffon skirt and casual top are common work attire that you can find at TJ Maxx in 2024,” remarked one user. “Sorry, but once again, The Devil Wears Prada is right,” another added, drawing connections between reality and the film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger‘s novel.

Sykes is noted not only for her fashion impact but also for her illustrious lineage. Her great-grandfather, Mark Sykes, was a British diplomat and a co-author of the Sykes-Picot Agreement in 1916, which significantly influenced the modern Middle East’s geographical and political landscape.

Adding another layer to the discussion, author Lauren Weisberger reportedly drew inspiration from Sykes for the character of Emily, an assistant to the fictional editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. The 2006 film adaptation featured actors Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt, further embedding Sykes’ legacy in popular culture.

Sykes, who continues to influence both fashion and literary circles, currently resides in the Cotswolds with her husband, Toby Rowland, and their two daughters.
