Former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Passes Away
Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, sadly passed away on Thursday morning in Kolkata. He was 80 years old and had been dealing with several health issues related to old age.
His family, including his wife Mira and daughter Suchetana, are left to mourn his loss. Bhattacharjee’s political journey was significant; he took over the Chief Minister’s role in 2000 from the long-serving Jyoti Basu.
His administration witnessed the end of a 34-year-long rule by the CPI(M)-led Left Front when they lost the 2011 Assembly elections to Mamata Banerjee‘s Trinamool Congress.
West Bengal’s current Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her shock and sorrow over the news. She extended her condolences to the grieving family, calling Bhattacharjee’s passing a sudden and deeply saddening event.
