14 Year Old Boy Vacation Costa Rica

MANUEL ANTONIO, Costa RicaMiller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, died Friday in a hotel room in this popular resort area, authorities reported on Monday. Preliminary investigations suggest he may have died from asphyxiation following a possible food-related illness.

According to a statement from Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia, an official with Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigative Agency, Miller’s condition deteriorated after he allegedly ingested contaminated food while on vacation with his family. The cause of death is still under investigation as autopsy and toxicology analyses are pending.

Asphyxiation occurs when the body does not receive enough oxygen, leading to loss of consciousness or death. The Mayo Clinic states that symptoms from food-related illnesses can include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Miller’s parents, Brett and Jessica Gardner, shared the tragic news in a heartfelt statement posted on social media. They described their son as a beloved member of the family who “left us far too soon,” highlighting his love for sports, particularly football, baseball, and golf.

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep,” the Gardners stated. “Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile.”

The Gardner family, who were vacationing in Costa Rica, reported that multiple family members experienced illness during their trip. Miller was the youngest of their two sons, the other being Hunter. The couple has been married since 2007.

The New York Yankees organization expressed condolences, saying in a statement that Miller had “a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.” Miller was currently attending high school and was often seen wearing a football jersey with the number 11, reflecting his father’s professional career.
