WASHINGTON, D.C. — Frito-Lay has announced a recall of approximately 1,295 bags of its 13-ounce Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips due to a potential undeclared allergen, nacho cheese-flavored chips, which could present a serious health risk to consumers with dairy allergies. The recall was initiated on March 26, 2025, following a determination by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that the situation falls under Class I, signifying a significant risk of adverse health consequences.

The recalled chips, available for purchase since March 7, were distributed in 13 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Consumers can identify affected packages by the UPC 28400 52848, a “Guaranteed Fresh” date of May 20, 2025, and specific manufacturing codes.

Milk, one of the most common food allergens in the U.S., poses a critical risk for allergic individuals. According to Food Allergy Research and Education, 6.2 million Americans are affected by milk allergies. Symptoms can range from hives and swelling to severe anaphylactic reactions, which may include difficulty breathing and loss of consciousness.

Frito-Lay has stated that no allergic reactions related to this issue have been reported to date. However, the company urges consumers with dairy allergies to discard the affected products. In a statement, Frito-Lay emphasized, “A limited number of bags are being recalled as they could include nacho cheese tortilla chips, and therefore may contain an undeclared milk allergen.”

Clinton Mathias, an associate professor at the University of Connecticut’s Department of Nutritional Sciences, noted the severity of milk allergy in his commentary to Newsweek: “Cow’s milk allergy is the most common allergy affecting infants and children in the U.S. Symptoms can vary significantly, and while many children may outgrow it, adult allergies are not uncommon,” he explained. Mathias advised those with allergies to avoid any exposure to milk proteins.

The FDA recommends that any consumers who purchased the recalled chips check their packaging. Those who find they possess an affected product should refrain from consumption and discard it immediately. For further assistance, Frito-Lay provides contact options via their website or a hotline at 1-800-352-4477, available Monday through Friday.

This recall follows a pattern of recent food recalls and highlights the ongoing vigilance required in food safety practices, especially regarding allergens. Consumers are encouraged to remain informed about product recalls that may affect their health and safety.
