Gas Explosion Mexico City October 2025

MÉXICO, October 10, 2025 — A gas pipeline explosion in Mexico City has resulted in 31 fatalities and more than 50 injuries, authorities reported.

The incident occurred around 2:25 p.m. on September 10, when a pipeline owned by Mexicana de Gas, part of Grupo Tomza, overturned on the Puente de la Concordia, releasing a white gas cloud. Eyewitnesses shared images on social media showing the area engulfed in smoke.

According to the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office, the explosion affected a wide area of 180 meters, engulfing both pedestrians and vehicles. The ensuing flames caused chaos as hospitals struggled to accommodate the influx of injured individuals.

Oscar Enrique Ochoa Orantes, the interim General Coordinator of Forensic Investigation and Expert Services, disclosed that the main cause of the explosion was attributed to the driver’s lack of skill. In a press conference, he stated, “A detailed study found that road conditions were compliant with safety standards, thus ruling out environmental factors.”

Data shows that the truck departed from Tuxpan, Veracruz, headed for Tláhuac, and was traveling at 44 kilometers per hour when it collided with a retaining wall. The truck and tank showed no significant damage.

The timing of this incident raised alarms, as it occurred just one month after another gas explosion in Iztapalapa that similarly impacted the community.

Despite ongoing investigations, the precise cause of the gas ignition remains unclear. Authorities continue to examine the incident to prevent future tragedies.
