GFA Explains Key Player Absences for Japan Friendly
AICHI, Japan — The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has clarified the absence of key players from the Black Stars squad ahead of the Kirin Challenge Cup. Communications Director Henry Asante Twum stated that several players were rested to recover and prepare for their club duties.
Notable absentees include Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Ernest Nuamah, Elisha Owusu, Alexander Djiku, and team captain Jordan Ayew, who will skip the upcoming friendlies against Japan and South Korea. Twum mentioned the mutual agreement between the GFA and the players was reached to prioritize their fitness.
“These players need rest while others are nursing injuries, so we decided to let them stay behind,” said Twum, affirming the decisions were based on legitimate concerns, not travel distance.
He emphasized the inclusion of new players in the squad, stating, “They have been on the technical team’s list for some time now, so this is an opportunity for them to prove their worth.” The friendly matches are aimed at assessing the national team and nurturing new talent.
The Black Stars held their first training session on November 12, 2025, where players participated in shooting drills and technical exercises. Head coach Chris Hughton actively engaged with the squad during practice.
The team will conclude their training at Toyota Stadium on November 13, before facing Japan on November 14 and South Korea on November 18.
These friendly matches will play a crucial role in developing the squad’s future.
