Global Affairs Canada Investigating Cyberattack And Data Breach

Global Affairs Canada is currently conducting an investigation into a cyberattack and data breach that has prompted the department to restrict remote access to its networks. The department released a statement confirming that personal information, including that of its employees, was accessed by an unauthorized individual during the incident.

Global Affairs Canada took swift action in response to the discovery of what it referred to as ‘malicious cyber activity.’ As a precautionary measure, remote access to its national networks was immediately suspended nearly a week ago. However, employees within Global Affairs buildings continue to have full access to the network, while those working remotely have been provided with temporary solutions to facilitate seamless work operations.

Global Affairs Canada, responsible for managing Canada’s foreign affairs portfolio, including overseas embassies and high commissions, stressed the importance of maintaining uninterrupted critical services and communication channels amid the ongoing investigation.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security and Shared Services Canada have been engaged to assist in the investigation. Although it is still in its early stages, initial findings have confirmed unauthorized access to personal information, resulting in the department reaching out to those affected.

The department maintains a proactive approach to monitoring network security and has reported the breach to the federal privacy commissioner, showcasing its commitment to safeguarding privacy rights. For the sake of operational and security considerations, Global Affairs Canada refrained from disclosing specific details pertaining to the breach.

As the investigation progresses, further information will be made available to ensure transparency and maintain public trust in the department’s cybersecurity measures. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threats faced by government entities and highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity practices in the digital age.
