Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has sanctioned the payment of a new minimum wage amounting to N70,000 for civil servants in the region. This development is a significant adjustment from the previous wage and aims to enhance the living conditions of government employees.

The announcement was made by Governor Zulum during a meeting with the technical committee responsible for implementing the national minimum wage in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the governor emphasized that this measure is aimed at providing relief to the workforce and their families, particularly those who have lost family members.

In addition to the adjustment in the minimum wage, Governor Zulum has also approved the dispensation of N3 billion as death benefits to the families of deceased civil servants. This initiative is part of broader efforts by the state administration to enhance the welfare of public sector workers.

“Our administration is committed to not only settling the backlog of gratuities but also ensuring an upward review of pensions for our retirees,” stated Governor Zulum as he handed over the cheque to the representatives of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NU). His commitment underscores ongoing strategies to address the financial challenges faced by both current and former state employees.

This decision follows federal developments, as President Bola Tinubu officially enacted the national minimum wage bill on July 29. The legislation raised the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000, thereby aligning Borno State’s new wage policy with the national standard. Moreover, the federal government had previously approved a review of the consolidated public service salary structure (CONPSS) to accommodate this wage increase.
