George Baldock, a defender for the Greek football team Panathinaikos, was discovered dead on Wednesday night in the swimming pool of his residence located in Glyfada, a suburb in the southern part of Athens. The circumstances leading to the 31-year-old’s passing are yet to be determined as police authorities continue their investigations.

Baldock, who was born in Buckingham, England, had recently transferred to Panathinaikos during the summer and was reported to have been in good health. Despite holding 12 international caps with the Greek national team, he was not part of the squad currently playing in London for the UEFA Nations League match against England scheduled for Thursday.

Baldock’s professional football career began with Milton Keynes Dons (MK Dons) in England, where he developed as a right back. He spent several seasons between 2011 and 2017 on loan at clubs such as Tamworth and Oxford United. In 2017, he signed with Sheffield United, for whom he appeared in over 200 league matches over a seven-year period. During his time with the “Blades,” he made his debut in the Premier League and subsequently earned a place in the Greek national team due to his Greek heritage via his grandmother.

The news of Baldock’s untimely death has caused much distress and surprise across Greece, leading to interruptions on several broadcasting platforms to report the tragic event. A coroner has been dispatched to the scene, and the area around his residence has been secured by police forces as they continue their inquiries into his death.
