Hakeem Jeffries Zohran Mamdani New York City Mayor

New York, NY — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries endorsed Zohran Mamdani for mayor of New York City on Friday, ahead of early voting starting Saturday. Jeffries stated that Mamdani has focused on the affordability crisis and aims to be a mayor for all New Yorkers.

Jeffries’ endorsement reflects a significant moment for the Democratic Party, bridging differences between establishment leaders and the progressive wing. He emphasized that Mamdani’s support from young voters is inspiring. “In that spirit, I support him and the entire citywide Democratic ticket in the general election,” Jeffries said.

Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and state assembly member, expressed gratitude for Jeffries’ support, saying, “This campaign is about bringing people together to improve the quality of life for every New Yorker.” Jeffries’ backing may influence undecided voters as the election approaches.

Jeffries also endorsed fellow Democrats Mark Levine and Jumaane Williams for city comptroller and public advocate. Political analysts noted the potential impact of Jeffries’ endorsement, especially since it comes just before early voting.

Republican Congressman Mike Lawler criticized Jeffries for endorsing Mamdani, labeling him as “the most radically extreme candidate for mayor in the history of the United States.” Lawler and others plan to use the endorsement in future campaigns.

Meanwhile, Mamdani’s opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, received support from notable figures including former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Cuomo aims to challenge Mamdani, who won the Democratic primary against him.

As tensions rise, the mayoral race continues to gain public attention, with key endorsements shifting the landscape. Early voting is set to begin, where voters will decide not just on the mayoral candidates but also on various city council races and additional ballot measures.
