International Women Of Courage Awards 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a poignant ceremony on April 1, 2025, Israeli attorney Amit Soussana was honored with the International Woman of Courage Award, recognizing her resilience after being held captive by Hamas for 55 days. Soussana received the award from First Lady Melania Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during an annual event celebrating women who exemplify courage and advocacy for peace and justice.

Soussana, who was taken hostage during the deadly Hamas raid on Israel in October 2023, expressed deep pride in receiving the award, stating it represents not just her fight but the struggles of many. “I accept this award on behalf of the brave women who fought with unimaginable courage on October 7, resisting terror in their homes,” she said, calling for the immediate return of hostages still held by Hamas.

Reflecting on her harrowing experience, Soussana recounted, “In captivity, I had no control over my body, no control over my life. The darkness was suffocating. Yet even in that darkness, one thing they could not take from me was the strength my mother instilled in me.” Her words resonated throughout the audience, illuminating the broader plight of women facing violence and oppression.

With more than 540 days since her release, Soussana urged the global community to advocate for those still suffering in captivity. “Every single day that passes is another day of unimaginable suffering,” she declared, stressing the urgency of bringing hostages home.

The International Women of Courage Award, established by the State Department in 2007, honors women who have shown exceptional bravery and leadership. This year, it recognized eight women from various countries, each notable for their commitment to human rights and justice.

Among the other award recipients were Henriette Da from Burkina Faso, who has championed social justice, and Georgiana Pascu from Romania, an advocate for the rights of institutionalized individuals with disabilities. The first lady highlighted the essential role of love and commitment in delivering justice during her speech, asserting, “These extraordinary women illuminate the transformative power of love in shaping our world.”

The gathering marked a significant moment for those who have suffered and persevered in the pursuit of justice. Through these honors, the international community is reminded of the struggles many women face worldwide and their relentless fight for a better future.
