Harmeet Dhillon Nominated as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights by President-elect Trump
President-elect Donald Trump has announced the nomination of Harmeet K. Dhillon as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. The announcement was made on Monday night through a post on Truth Social.
Dhillon, a prominent free speech attorney based in California, has a robust background in protecting civil liberties. She has been involved in several high-profile cases, including taking on Big Tech for censoring free speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during the COVID-19 pandemic, and suing corporations that use “woke” policies to discriminate against their workers. Trump praised Dhillon, stating that she is one of the top election lawyers in the country, dedicated to ensuring that only legal votes are counted.
Dhillon has strong ties to the Republican Party, having served as the vice chairperson for the California Republican Party and running for the chairperson position of the Republican National Committee in 2023, although she was unsuccessful in unseating Ronna McDaniel. She has also been involved in the RNC‘s election integrity efforts and has worked to keep Trump on the ballot in various states.
Dhillon expressed her gratitude and excitement about the nomination on X, stating, “I am extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda. It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country, and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers led by @PamBondi”.
Dhillon is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School and has clerked in the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. She is also a respected member of the Sikh religious community. In her new role, she is expected to be a tireless defender of constitutional rights and to enforce civil rights and election laws fairly and firmly).
