Hatch, the manufacturer of popular sleep devices, has issued a voluntary recall of close to 1 million power adapters that were sold with the Rest 1st Generation sound machines. The recall comes after the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) flagged a potential electrical shock hazard associated with the plastic housing of the adapters. Based in Palo Alto, California, Hatch announced that about 919,000 units of the recalled power adapters were distributed nationwide, with an additional 44,000 units sold in Canada.

The specific concern highlighted by Hatch is that the plastic housing surrounding the AC power adapter provided with some Rest 1st Generation sound machines may detach when users try to unplug the adapter from the power outlet. This exposes the power prongs, potentially endangering consumers with a shock hazard. The company has identified the model number of the problematic power adapters as CYAP05 050100U.

According to reports received by Hatch, there have been 19 incidents where the plastic housing of the AC power adapter detached, leading to two cases of minor electrical shocks experienced by consumers. As a precautionary measure, Hatch has stopped sourcing adapters from the manufacturer Jiangsu Chenyang Electron Co., a key player in the production of the recalled adapters.

Kate Gibson, a dedicated reporter for CBS MoneyWatch based in New York, highlighted the details of the Hatch recall. The company has urged consumers with the affected power adapters to discontinue use immediately and reach out to Hatch for a replacement. Consumers can contact Hatch at (888) 918-4614 during business hours or via email for assistance.

The recall encompasses power adapters that were retailed online through various channels such as Hatch.co and Amazon, along with physical stores like BestBuy, BuyBuyBaby, Nordstrom, Pottery Barn Kids, and Target. Sales of the impacted power adapters occurred between January 2019 and September 2022 across these platforms.

The CPSC has emphasized the importance of consumers ceasing the use of the recalled power adapters associated with the Rest 1st Generation sound machines. Individuals are instructed to cut the cord of the adapter, take a photo displaying the model number and the severed cord, and submit this information through Hatch’s dedicated recall webpage at www.hatch.co/adapterrecall. The company assures affected consumers that they will receive a free replacement power adapter promptly.

As of July 4, 2024, Hatch continues to collaborate with the CPSC to effectively manage the recall process and ensure consumer safety. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
