Henry Cavill Joins Cast of Amazon’s Live-Action ‘Voltron’ Movie
Amazon MGM Studios has announced that Henry Cavill, known for his portrayal of Superman and his role in ‘The Witcher,’ is set to headline a new live-action film about giant robots, specifically based on the anime series ‘Voltron.’ The film will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
In addition to Cavill, the film will feature Daniel Quinn-Toye, an actor noted for his performances on the West End stage alongside Tom Holland. The series ‘Voltron’ itself is adapted from the Japanese sci-fi shows ‘Beast King GoLion’ and ‘Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV,’ and was popularized in the United States under the title ‘Voltron: Defender of the Universe’ during the mid-1980s. The story focuses on five young pilots who operate the Robot Lions, mechanical entities that combine to form the colossal robot Voltron.
Currently, details on the plot of this new iteration remain undisclosed. The screenplay has been co-authored by Thurber and Ellen Shanman. The production team includes Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures, Bob Koplar from World Events Productions, Thurber himself, and David Hoberman of Hobie Films.
Henry Cavill’s recent projects this year include roles in action thrillers like Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Argyle‘ for Apple Original Films and Guy Ritchie’s ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare‘ for Lionsgate. Cavill also made a notable cameo in this summer’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
Beyond his involvement in ‘Voltron,’ Cavill is teaming up once again with Guy Ritchie for ‘In The Grey,’ co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzalez. Additionally, Cavill is set to star in Chad Stahelski’s reboot of ‘Highlander,’ scheduled to shoot next year. Further cementing his ties with Amazon, Cavill is also executive producing a series based on the ‘Warhammer 40,000‘ franchise for the studio.
