High Security Planned for Upcoming El Clásico Soccer Match

Barcelona, Spain — Security preparations for the upcoming El Clásico on Sunday will involve around 700 officials, nearly double the usual number for a regular match. This increased presence aims to ensure fan safety during the high-profile match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, scheduled for 16:15 local time.
Of the total security personnel, approximately 300 will be police officers, supplemented by around 140 from the Guardia Urbana. Joan Salamaña, the general coordinator of security for sporting events in Catalunya, emphasized the need for thorough planning and coordination. “We can’t leave anything to chance,” he said. “Everything that can be anticipated must be accounted for.”
The match has been designated as high risk by the State Commission against Violence due to its potential for conflict. Increased security measures will include enhanced access controls, ticket monitoring, and possibly staggered entry times for fans. However, Salamaña noted that no radical fan groups, known for violent behavior, are expected to attend this match.
This year’s season has seen the lowest number of fan confrontations recorded since measurement began, with only one notable fight occurring this season between fan groups from Córdoba and Almería. “If we know how and when fans travel, we can effectively prepare the police response,” Salamaña explained. He pointed out that fans traveling for earlier matches are generally easier to monitor to avoid risks.
Security plans also extend to controlling fan activities inside the stadium. “What we manage outside influences our approach inside,” said Salamaña. The time of the match plays a critical role, with daytime games generally leading to less alcohol consumption than those held at night.
In terms of communication, both teams’ security heads will exchange vital information about the visiting fans, ensuring they are adequately prepared. A total of about 300 Madrid fans are expected to attend, although they will not be the only ones present. Meanwhile, there are protocols in place to manage any potential incidents, including relocating fans deemed at risk.
In addition to safety measures, the match will feature an extensive broadcast setup. Movistar LaLiga will employ 40 cameras, doubling the usual coverage, including two 4K mobile units, to ensure comprehensive live coverage.
Officials are confident that every necessary precaution is being taken to ensure the match proceeds without incident, enabling the focus to remain squarely on the field.
