2024 US House of Representatives Election Results: Republicans Retain Majority
The 2024 United States House of Representatives elections, held on November 5, 2024, saw the Republican Party retain their majority in the House. According to the latest projections, Republicans have secured at least 218 seats, ensuring their control over the chamber. The Associated Press has projected 219 seats for Republicans and 213 seats for Democrats, with some races still pending final results, such as Iowa‘s 1st district which is going to a recount, and California‘s 13th and 45th districts which are yet to finish counting votes.
This election marked several significant milestones. For the first time since 2016, Republicans won a majority of the congressional delegation in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Democrats also made gains, winning more than one seat in Alabama for the first time since 2008 and in Louisiana for the first time since 2006.
Historically, Sarah McBride of Delaware became the first openly transgender member of the United States Congress, marking a landmark moment in the election.
In various competitive races across the country, California’s congressional districts were closely watched. Republicans defended several seats considered toss-ups, including Orange County’s 45th District, Riverside County’s 41st District, and the Antelope Valley’s 27th District. These races were crucial as they could have tipped the balance of power in the House, though ultimately, the Republicans maintained their slim majority.
The Republican control of the House, combined with their gains in the Senate and the presidential election, has given the party a governmental trifecta for the first time since they lost it following the 2018 midterms.
