Houston Winter Storm Black Ice Road Closures

HOUSTON, Texas – Snowfall in Houston has ceased, but the region remains under threat from hazardous black ice and freezing temperatures, officials warned Tuesday. The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Cold Warning, with wind chill values as low as 10 degrees expected overnight.

Rosenberg Police reported the closure of FM 723 over the Brazos River Bridge due to ice, while Houston Transtar warned of black ice forming on major roadways. “Melted snow is freezing on area roads, creating large patches of black ice,” officials stated. Multiple accidents have been reported across Harris County, with conditions expected to worsen overnight.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez urged residents to stay home, citing dangerous road conditions. “It is too dangerous now, and most businesses are closed. Stay safe, stay home!” Gonzalez said. The sheriff’s office reported 168 crashes since 10 p.m. Friday night, including a serious incident on FM 1960 where a man suffered a broken leg after being struck by a vehicle while pushing a stranded car.

Warming centers have been opened across Harris County for those in need of shelter. Officials emphasized the importance of avoiding travel, as black ice remains nearly invisible and poses significant risks to motorists and first responders alike.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire warned that the next 24 hours could be the most dangerous of the winter storm. “We’re not done,” said Harris County Emergency Management Coordinator Mark Sloan, noting that freezing temperatures are expected to persist overnight.

Airports in the region, including William P. Hobby Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport, are set to reopen Wednesday after weather-related closures. Meanwhile, local businesses, including Kroger and Central Market, adjusted their hours due to the storm.

Residents captured rare moments of snowfall, with some even skiing at Eleanor Tinsley Park. However, the focus remains on safety as officials continue to monitor road conditions and respond to emergencies.
