Viktor Orbán And Donald Trump Meeting

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has extended his best wishes to former U.S. President Donald Trump as the latter prepares for the upcoming presidential election against Vice President Kamala Harris. Orbán made the announcement on the social media platform X, stating, “Just got off the phone with President @realDonaldTrump. I wished him the best of luck for next Tuesday. Only five days to go. Fingers crossed.”

This gesture of support is not unexpected, given the strong rapport between Orbán and Trump. The two leaders have maintained a close relationship since Trump’s presidency, with Orbán expressing his preference for a Trump administration over a Hillary Clinton one as early as 2016. Recently, Orbán met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in July, following a NATO summit in Washington.

Orbán’s endorsement comes as he continues to lead Hungary under what he terms an “illiberal democracy.” Since assuming office in 2010, his government has implemented various controversial measures, including restrictions on the free press, alterations to electoral regulations to benefit his party, and the enactment of anti-LGBTQ+ policies. Despite these actions, Orbán has gained popularity among certain factions of the American right.

However, not all Republicans support Orbán’s approach. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has criticized the ‘cult of personality’ surrounding the Hungarian leader, emphasizing that Hungary’s leaders see a future of American decline and that such views do not serve America‘s interests.
