Hyundai Issues Multiple Recalls Affecting Over 200,000 Vehicles in the US
Hyundai has announced several significant recalls affecting a substantial number of vehicles in the United States. One of the recalls involves over 42,000 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz and Hyundai Tucson vehicles due to a wiring issue that can cause the car to roll away. The affected vehicles have transmissions that can shift out of park without the brake pedal being applied, posing a risk of accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises owners to continue driving their vehicles but to be cautious, with notification letters expected to be mailed out in January.
In addition to the Santa Cruz and Tucson recall, Hyundai is also recalling certain 2024 models of the Elantra, Venue, and Kona. These vehicles are at risk due to an electrical short circuit in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve assembly, which can result in a loss of drive power and increase the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the EGR valve assembly free of charge, with owner notification letters having been mailed out in June 2024.
Another recall affects 2024 Hyundai Sonata vehicles, where a software issue can cause the brake lights to flash instead of illuminating properly, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108. This issue can confuse other drivers and increase the risk of accidents. Dealers will update the rear brake light software free of charge, with owner notification letters mailed out in October 2024.
Hyundai is also recalling over 145,000 electric vehicles in the US, including some IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70, and Genesis G80 models, due to charging unit faults. This recall is part of a larger action that also includes Kia, which is recalling 62,000 EV6 models for similar safety concerns.
These recalls highlight a series of safety issues affecting various Hyundai and Genesis models, emphasizing the need for prompt action by vehicle owners to ensure their safety on the road.
