Ice Storm Mid Atlantic Region February 2025

CUMBERLAND, Md. — A severe ice storm warning has prompted school closures and delays across the Mid-Atlantic region, with significant impacts expected on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025. The National Weather Service issued the warning, predicting up to one inch of snow and sleet, along with ice accumulations of up to three-tenths of an inch.

The storm, which began Wednesday evening, is expected to create hazardous road conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Power outages and tree damage are likely, with travel described as “nearly impossible” during the height of the storm. The hazardous conditions are expected to disrupt the Thursday morning commute.

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) announced a two-hour delay for Thursday, while Allegany County Public Schools opted to close entirely. Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University will open at 11 a.m., delaying the start of classes to allow for safer travel conditions.

Local municipalities are also adjusting services. The City of Cumberland suspended trash collection for Thursday, rescheduling it for Feb. 10. Waste Management‘s Mountainview Landfill will remain closed due to the storm.

“Travel is strongly discouraged,” the National Weather Service warned. “If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.” Residents are advised to prepare for potential power outages and to avoid sudden braking or acceleration on icy roads.

The storm is expected to transition from freezing rain to regular rain by Thursday morning as temperatures rise. However, the lingering effects of the ice accumulation will likely cause disruptions throughout the day.
