Inmate Attacks Correctional Officers, One Dies in Virginia

Virginia Inmate Attack Correctional Officer

GRAYSON COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) – An inmate at River North Correctional Center is accused of attacking two correctional officers on Monday morning, resulting in the death of one officer. The incident occurred around 7:53 a.m. on November 17, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

Both officers were transported to a hospital, where one was pronounced dead. VADOC confirmed that the facility is secure following the attack.

"Our agency and the entire Commonwealth are in mourning today," said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. "Our hearts are with the officer’s family, the other officer who was attacked, and to our public safety heroes at River North. The VADOC will do everything in its power to ensure this vicious attack is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

No names of the officers have been released as the investigation by the VADOC Office of Law Enforcement Services is ongoing.
