Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Announcement Press Conference

DES MOINES, Iowa – Governor Kim Reynolds announced Friday that she will not seek a third term as Iowa’s governor, effectively ending her nearly 10 years in office.

In a video shared on social media, Reynolds stated, “After a lot of thought, prayer, and conversations with my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in 2026.” Her decision comes as she looks to return her focus to family commitments.

Reynolds, who first took office in May 2017 after then-Governor Terry Branstad stepped down to serve as U.S. Ambassador to China, reflected on her time in public service, saying, “Serving as your governor has been the greatest honor of my life.” She emphasized the significance of family, stating, “As Iowans know, family is everything.”

In her statement, Reynolds mentioned her desire to be present for her family’s future milestones, saying she wants to “help them through the next stage of life,” including attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. This decision marks a shift in priorities as her term nears its end.

Reynolds vowed to continue working diligently until the conclusion of her term, remarking, “I’m more energized than ever to finish what we started and to leave Iowa in the strongest possible position for the future.”

She also expressed confidence in the future leadership of the state and her party, stating, “Together, we have built a foundation of strong conservative leadership that will continue to serve this state well.”

The Republican Governor highlighted the importance of community values and hard work that define Iowa, thanking supporters and stating, “I have done my best to honor that trust every day.”

The next Iowa gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 3, 2026. Reynolds, who previously served as lieutenant governor and a state senator, has been an influential figure in Iowa politics. She successfully ran for a full term in 2018 and won reelection in 2022.

The announcement could pave the way for new candidates to enter the race, as Iowa Republicans prepare for their next chapter in leadership.
