Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and Christian County Public Schools in Kentucky will operate on a two-hour delay Tuesday, January 7, due to lingering winter weather conditions. Both districts cited concerns about icy roads and sidewalks as the primary reason for the delay.

IPS officials urged families to prepare for potential bus delays and advised students walking to school or bus stops to allow extra time. ‘Because we know that many roads and sidewalks are not completely clear throughout the city, please make sure that you and your students are prepared for the possibility of bus delays in the morning and after school,’ the district said in a statement. Bus riders were encouraged to track their buses using the First View app.

Christian County Public Schools also emphasized safety concerns. ‘This delay will provide our bus drivers with better visibility on the roads, allowing them to identify ice spots or any low or downed limbs,’ district spokeswoman Johnna Brown said in a press release. The district canceled morning and afternoon preschool sessions and will not serve breakfast on Tuesday.

Both districts confirmed that staff members should report to schools at their normal times. IPS noted that after-school activities would be canceled for the day, while Christian County’s Inspire Early Learning Academy will operate on its regular schedule.

The delays follow a winter storm that brought freezing rain and hazardous conditions to the region over the weekend. Many schools, government offices, and businesses closed Monday as a result. IPS also reminded parents to ensure students are dressed warmly for the colder temperatures, particularly while waiting at bus stops or walking to school.

Innovation schools within the IPS district may follow different schedules, and families were advised to look for separate communications from those schools.
