Jagmeet Singh Prepares for Crucial 2025 Canadian Election

OTTAWA, Canada – Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and a notable figure in Canadian politics, is gearing up for the highly anticipated 2025 federal election scheduled for later today.
Singh, who is running his third federal election campaign, faces significant challenges as recent polls indicate the NDP is experiencing some of its lowest support levels in years. The first ethnic minority politician to lead a major federal party in Canada, Singh has launched his campaign with pointed criticisms of Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Only the New Democrats can be trusted to champion the causes of ordinary Canadians,” Singh declared. A practicing Sikh of Punjabi descent and a former provincial legislator, Singh aims to leverage his unique background in this competitive race.
Born in Scarborough, Ontario, Singh is the son of Indian immigrants who came from the Malwa region of Punjab. His family history includes activists and soldiers, with his great-grandfather, Sewa Singh Thikriwala, having fought for Indian independence.
Despite his accomplishments, Singh has openly discussed the hardships of his upbringing, including challenges related to his father’s alcoholism and his own experience with childhood abuse. He aspires to use these experiences to connect with voters.
Singh, 46, entered federal politics after serving as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario. He became NDP leader in 2017, making history as the first Sikh leader of a major federal political party in Canada. His background in law and history of advocacy have shaped his political aspirations.
He is engaged to Gurkiran ‘Ginu’ Kaur Sidhu, and together they have been active in community engagement, recently announcing they are expecting their second child. The couple married in February 2018 and have one daughter, Anhad, born in January 2022.
As Singh moves forward into the election, his ability to resonate with voters and address pressing issues will be crucial for the NDP’s future.
