In a surprising turn of events, Vice President Kamala Harris is receiving significant support from prominent Democrats after President Joe Biden announced he would not be seeking reelection in the 2024 presidential race. Among those voicing their backing is former Georgia State Senator Jason Carter, who is the grandson of President Jimmy Carter.

Initially, Jason Carter admits he was taken aback by Biden’s decision to bow out of the presidential race. However, once the initial shock faded, he found the choice to be in line with Biden’s longstanding character and commitment to the country. Carter noted, “Joe Biden has done a lot throughout his whole life to demonstrate he’s the kind of person to put his country above himself, and so it wasn’t out of character.”

Carter goes on to express his strong support for Biden’s decision, indicating that he believes Kamala Harris is the best choice for the Democratic ticket moving forward. “Vice President Harris has the benefit of being part of this ticket and having been a part of this ticket for the last several months and years. She’s run before nationally; she’s been part of the team that beat Trump last time, and she knows how this works,” he stated.

The enthusiasm for Harris is palpable among many Georgia Democrats, according to Carter. He has witnessed a surge of support in light of Biden’s withdrawal, claiming, “I think the energy we all feel this day, yesterday, I think that’s going to continue.”

Reflecting on how his grandfather, President Jimmy Carter, might feel about Biden’s decision, Jason Carter shared that he believes his grandfather would feel proud. The connection between the two presidents runs deep—having known each other for over fifty years. “I think he’d be proud of his friend Joe Biden. They’ve known each other for 50 years, and I think this is one of those moments that you have someone we all respect in Joe Biden doing something we all respect,” he shared.

While he stands firm in his belief that Biden made the right choice, Jason Carter did not shy away from affirming that he is confident in the president’s ability to complete his term in office.

As the political landscape further shifts with Biden’s departure, support for Kamala Harris continues to grow among key party members in the context of the upcoming election, showcasing a solid shift as the Democratic Party looks to rally behind a new leader.
