Jennifer Lawrence Calls Gaza Violence ‘Genocide’ at Film Festival

Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain — Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence expressed her deep concerns about the ongoing violence in Gaza during a press conference at the San Sebastián International Film Festival on Friday. Describing the situation as ‘no less than a genocide’, Lawrence stated, ‘I’m terrified. It’s mortifying. What’s happening is unacceptable.’
Lawrence’s comments came in response to journalist inquiries concerning the Israeli offensive that has reportedly led to over 65,000 deaths and the destruction of much of Gaza since October 7, 2023. She connected these global events to the state of political discourse in the United States, lamenting, ‘What makes me so sad is the disrespect in the discourse of American politics right now and how that is going to be normalized to the kids right now.’
Throughout the press event, festival moderators attempted to steer clear of politically charged questions, but Lawrence was unwavering in her remarks. She addressed the importance of understanding responsibility, saying, ‘Please stay focused on who is responsible rather than directing anger at artists and actors.’ This statement likely referenced a pledge signed by over 400 figures in the entertainment industry to boycott Israeli film institutions for their alleged complicity in the violence against Palestinians.
While Lawrence has not signed this boycott or a concurrent petition, she emphasized the continuing attacks on free speech in the U.S. She remarked, ‘Our freedom of speech and expression is under attack, and I think the world of cinema and using your voice in artistic ways are important.’
Lawrence is at the festival not only to screen her latest film, ‘Die, My Love,’ but also to receive the honorary Donostia award. The movie, directed by Lynne Ramsay, portrays a mother grappling with psychosis amidst her strained relationships.
‘Die, My Love’ is set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025, after first premiering in Cannes. In her performance, Lawrence explores intense themes of motherhood and mental health, a role praised for its emotional depth.
The San Sebastián International Film Festival began on September 19 and wraps up on Saturday, September 29, 2025. The expansive conversation surrounding global issues and their impact on future generations was captured poignantly by Lawrence, who expressed her fears for the children growing up in a world rife with political division and violence.
