Jersey City Records First Homicide of 2025 in Greenville Shooting
Jersey City authorities are investigating the first homicide of 2025 after a fatal shooting in the Greenville neighborhood. According to Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez, police responded to the area of Lembeck Avenue and Old Bergen Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, where they discovered 20-year-old Rahmiere Morris with a gunshot wound to the torso.
Morris was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center but was pronounced dead an hour later. The cause and manner of death are pending an official determination by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday morning.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office at 201-915-1345. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s online portal. All information will be kept confidential, officials said.
The incident marks a grim start to the year for Jersey City, which saw a record low number of homicides in 2024. The city has been working to reduce violent crime through community policing and targeted initiatives, but this shooting underscores the challenges that remain.
Rahmiere Morris, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, is remembered by friends and family as a young man with a bright future. Community leaders have called for calm and cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation unfolds.
