Jessica Ramos Andrew Cuomo Mayoral Race

NEW YORK (WABC) — New York State Senator Jessica Ramos is reportedly endorsing former Governor Andrew Cuomo for New York City’s next mayor. The announcement is planned for 11 a.m. at a Carpenters Union news conference.

Ramos, who is also running for mayor, has been critical of Cuomo’s past actions, even questioning his mental fitness during the campaign. Despite this, she is hoping to attract union support that has historically backed Cuomo.

The two faced each other in a debate earlier this week, alongside other candidates. Ramos’s decision to endorse Cuomo surprises many, especially given her past calls for his resignation during previous controversies.

Ramos’s campaign has struggled to gain momentum, reflecting only single-digit polling numbers and a lack of funds, with just $9,000 in her campaign account. She did not qualify for the recent NY1 debate, which featured seven other candidates.

As chair of the State Senate’s Labor Committee, Ramos maintains strong connections with the city’s labor movement. Her endorsement may indicate potential strategic alliances among candidates in this competitive race.

The mayoral primary will utilize ranked-choice voting, allowing voters to rank up to five candidates, which may lead to strategic cross-endorsements, similar to the 2021 race where Andrew Yang endorsed Kathryn Garcia.
