Jharkhand Election Results and Ongoing Manipur Conflict: Key Updates from India

The state of Jharkhand in India is awaiting the results of its assembly elections, which were held in two phases on November 13 and 20. The elections saw a keen contest between the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Both alliances are optimistic about forming the government, with most exit polls predicting a victory for the BJP-led alliances in Jharkhand and Maharashtra.

In another significant development, the conflict in Manipur continues to escalate. The situation has led to the deployment of additional troops to maintain peace, particularly in the fringe and vulnerable valley areas adjoining the hill districts. According to the security advisor, the conflict has claimed 258 lives so far. To ensure the safety of legislators, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) have set up bunkers and barricades outside their homes.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed an interim fine of ₹5 crore on a pharmaceutical unit in Punjab for flouting pollution norms. The NGT has directed the Punjab State Pollution Control Board to initiate criminal proceedings against the unit for past violations.
