Jon Tester’s Senate Race in Montana Tightens as Election Day Approaches
As the 2024 election enters its final days, the Senate race in Montana between incumbent Democrat Jon Tester and Republican nominee Tim Sheehy has become increasingly competitive. After months of Democratic pessimism, party strategists are now more optimistic about Tester’s reelection chances, citing a late surge in support that has put him within striking distance of his opponent.
Tester’s poll numbers, which had dipped significantly by the end of summer, have rebounded in recent weeks. According to Democratic strategists, while Tester’s hold on the Senate seat remains precarious, his support has grown enough to make the race a virtual toss-up. Former Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer described the race as so close that it could be decided by a coin flip.
The significance of this race extends beyond Montana, as it could determine which party controls the Senate and, by extension, influence the next president’s ability to pass laws, appoint judges, and confirm Cabinet members. Despite Montana’s trend towards Republican dominance, Tester has managed to stay competitive, partly due to his extensive record of bringing billions of dollars to the state and his strong local presence.
Tester’s campaign has also outspent Sheehy’s, running more advertisements to counter Sheehy’s limited public appearances and scarce media coverage. Sheehy, who relocated from Minnesota, has largely relied on his advertisements to reach voters, especially in rural areas where local news coverage is sparse.
Recent polling indicates that the race is neck and neck, with some polls showing Tester tied with Sheehy. This tight contest underscores the challenges faced by Democrats in a state that has increasingly turned red, but also highlights Tester’s resilience and political acumen).
