Jordan Klepper Reflects on Capitol Insurrection During Tour

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Comedian Jordan Klepper, known for his work on Comedy Central‘s “The Daily Show,” will discuss the Capitol insurrection during his upcoming performance at the Paramount Theatre on Friday, Oct. 17.
Klepper, 46, was present in Washington, D.C., on January 6, 2021, when a mob of supporters of then-President Donald Trump attacked the Capitol. While recounting his experience from his New York City apartment, Klepper recalled asking people about the planned insurrection and noted the alarming candidness of their responses.
“They told me and it was wild since it was no secret. Trump was hyping the event,” Klepper said. “People were there because they wanted to stop the vote for President Joe Biden, and we were right there when people went over the barricade.”
Klepper remarked on the chaotic scene, describing it as a mix of the tragic and absurd. “I watched people try to break into the Capitol with pepper spray and zip ties to overthrow the government. They were very much dressed for battle.”
During his tour, titled “Suffering Fools,” Klepper will reflect on his experiences covering political rallies and protests. The show will also feature his special presentation, “Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse: Into the MAGAverse,” in which he explores contemporary political dynamics.
This performance will add a thoughtful layer to his stand-up routine, blending humor with serious dialogues on American politics. “People are eager to chat it up. I’ll open it up to the audience,” he said, emphasizing his intent to foster meaningful conversations.
Klepper is optimistic about the future despite current divisions in the country. “I see hope in the sheer idiocy of this administration,” he remarked. “The younger generation I spoke with showed a lack of cruelty that older conservatives seem to push onto them.”
As he prepares for the show, Klepper reflected on his admiration for former host Jon Stewart, who he says had a significant impact on his career. “Jon hired me and gave me my break. It’s such an honor to work on the show with Jon,” he said.
Klepper will share the stage with special guest Langhorne Slim. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are available starting at $91 through the venue’s website and box office.
When not performing, Klepper enjoys time at home with his wife, actress Laura Grey, and their five-year-old son. He adds humor to parenting, noting that his son is less interested in politics, preferring to watch children’s programming instead.
