King County Metro Unveils Three Phase Plan For Bus Restructure Along Lynnwood Link Extension

King County Metro has announced the finalization of its bus restructure plan in preparation for the upcoming Lynnwood Link Extension launch by Sound Transit later this year. The plan, focusing on service enhancements and route adjustments, will be implemented in three distinct phases.

The overall plan indicates a significant improvement in service quality, with increased weekday and weekend trips, extended service hours, and enhanced route frequency. Notable additions include new east-west routes and improved connections to light rail stations like NE 130th St and Roosevelt.

One key highlight is the improved service in Shoreline with more frequency and span, promoting public transit as a viable option for suburban commuters to access light rail services without relying on personal vehicles.

Metro has responded to public feedback by reinstating local service to sections of Meridian Avenue N in Shoreline, ensuring better coverage and accessibility for residents. However, the plan also includes the retirement of certain routes like Route 73 and Route 20, leaving some areas without replacement services.

The multi-phased rollout is scheduled as follows: Phase 1 in Fall 2022, Phase 2 in 2025, and Phase 3 in 2026. Each phase introduces a mix of new routes, revised services, and route extensions to streamline the transit network.

While the plan outlines several service improvements, it acknowledges potential operational constraints that may necessitate a scaled implementation approach, gradually expanding service capabilities in alignment with operational capacity.

The King County Council is set to review and approve the plan, paving the way for its implementation starting August 31, coinciding with the Lynnwood Link Extension opening, and marking a significant milestone in the region’s public transportation network.
