Kristen Stewart’s ‘Spencer’ Hits Netflix After Oscar Nod
LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Kristen Stewart‘s critically acclaimed portrayal of Princess Diana in the 2021 historical drama “Spencer” will debut on Netflix on February 8, offering audiences another chance to see the performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Directed by Pablo Larraín (“Jackie“), the film reimagines the traditional historical drama, focusing on Princess Diana’s emotional turmoil during the 1991 Christmas holiday at Sandringham House in Norfolk, England. The story captures her struggles with her crumbling marriage to Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) and his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles (Emma Darwall-Smith), while highlighting her devotion to her sons, Prince William (Jack Nielen) and Prince Harry (Freddie Spry).
“Spencer” diverges from conventional biopics, blending surreal elements and drawing parallels to Anne Boleyn‘s tragic fate. Stewart’s performance, praised for its intensity and vulnerability, divided audiences but won over critics, earning the film an 83% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, general audiences were less enthusiastic, giving it a 52% approval rating.
Screenwriter Steven Knight crafted a narrative that juxtaposes Diana’s personal struggles with the rigid traditions of the royal family. The film’s setting at Sandringham House, near Diana’s childhood home, Park House, adds a layer of poignancy to her isolation and emotional unraveling.
“The world has long been fascinated by Princess Diana,” said Larraín in a 2021 interview. “This film is not just about her life but about her inner world, her dreams, and her nightmares.”
Stewart’s portrayal marked a career milestone, earning her widespread acclaim and her first Oscar nomination. While the film’s experimental style and Stewart’s bold performance may not appeal to all viewers, its upcoming Netflix release ensures a broader audience can decide for themselves.
“Spencer” will join Netflix’s extensive library on February 8, alongside other acclaimed titles, offering subscribers a chance to revisit or discover Stewart’s transformative performance.
