H D Kumaraswamy Takes Oath as Union Minister in Modi Government 3.0
H D Kumaraswamy, a prominent figure in Karnataka‘s political landscape, was sworn in as a Union Minister in the third term of the Modi government, despite his JD(S) party recently aligning with the NDA under Modi’s leadership. The Vokkaliga leader, Kumaraswamy, secured victory in the Mandya constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, defeating his rival Venkataramane Gowda from the Congress by a significant margin.
With a history of both collaboration and clashes with major political parties like the BJP and Congress, Kumaraswamy’s entry into the Union Cabinet marks a significant shift in his political career. He has often been referred to as the “accidental Chief Minister” by the BJP in Karnataka due to his unexpected rise to power.
Having a background in film production and distribution through Channambika Films, Kumaraswamy has leveraged his family ties, notably with his father and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, to make a mark in politics. His wife, Anita Kumaraswamy, and son, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, have also been active in politics in recent years.
Kumaraswamy’s tumultuous political journey saw him serve as the Chief Minister of Karnataka twice, with his alliances with the BJP and Congress met with mixed results. His tenure has been marked by significant policy decisions, including farm loan waivers, drawing both praise and criticism.
As Kumaraswamy takes on his new role as a Union Minister, his focus on the agriculture sector is evident. His ambitions to contribute to the welfare of farmers align with his past initiatives like the farm loan waivers and the ‘gram vastavya’ project during his Chief Ministerial stints.
Despite facing challenges within his party and criticisms from former colleagues like S R Srinivas, Kumaraswamy’s ability to rally support in the Lok Sabha elections showcases his enduring influence and political acumen in the state of Karnataka.
