Ladakh To Witness Independent Poll In Single Phase For Lok Sabha Seat

The Election Commission of India has announced that the remote region of Ladakh will experience an independent polling for a single Lok Sabha seat on May 20. This marks a significant change as Ladakh was previously a part of Jammu and Kashmir constituency.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the Bharatiya Janata Party emerged victorious securing 33.94% of the votes against independent candidate Sajjad Hussain. Previously, the 2014 Lok Sabha elections saw Thupstan Chhewang from BJP claiming the seat.

With a voter turnout of 76.4% in the 2019 Parliamentary elections, Ladakh showcases high civic engagement. The region boasts a literacy rate of 90.29% according to the 2011 Census, with notable male literacy at 94.89% and female literacy at 78.85%.
