Lakers’ Maxi Kleber Returns to Practice, Timeline for Return Still Unclear

Los Angeles, CA — Los Angeles Lakers forward Maxi Kleber has resumed on-court activities as he continues to recover from surgery on his right foot. Head coach JJ Redick provided the update during a press conference, indicating that while Kleber is making progress, no clear timetable exists for his return to gameplay.
Kleber has been sidelined for over two months and has yet to make his debut for the Lakers, following his acquisition as part of a high-profile trade involving Luka Doncic earlier this season. His last appearance was on January 25, as a member of the Dallas Mavericks, where he played just 11 minutes against the Boston Celtics, finishing with one point from 0-of-6 shooting along with one rebound, one assist, and one block.
Before his injury, the 33-year-old averaged 3.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game for the season, shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 26.5 percent from three-point range. Over eight seasons with the Mavericks from 2017 to 2025, Kleber participated in 440 regular-season games, averaging 6.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 22.3 minutes. In the playoffs, he has played 44 games, starting 10, and averaged 6.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.
Kleber’s move to the Lakers was part of a trade that sent shockwaves through the league before the current season’s deadline. Along with Markieff Morris and Doncic, Kleber was traded to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, rookie Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The multi-team agreement also included the Utah Jazz, who received former Lakers guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and a future second-round pick.
As the Lakers prepare for their first-round playoff matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, it appears unlikely that Kleber will participate in that series. However, if the Lakers advance, his potential return could prove crucial, particularly given his ability to stretch the floor with his outside shooting.
In their final game of the regular season, the Lakers are set to face the Houston Rockets. Following a recent victory against the Mavericks, the Lakers have already secured a playoff spot and are aiming for a higher seed in the Western Conference. The Rockets currently hold the second seed after a strong season, finishing with over 50 wins.
Looking ahead to the playoff landscape, the Lakers hope to enter with a healthy roster. LeBron James, who recently returned from a groin strain, is listed as probable for the Rockets matchup. Meanwhile, Kleber remains out as he continues his rehabilitation.
The Rockets will also be missing several key players, including Jae'Sean Tate due to right ankle soreness, with others like Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., and Fred VanVleet being listed as questionable for the game.
Both teams are poised for what promises to be a competitive playoff run. For the Lakers, having Kleber back on the court could provide a significant boost as they vie for the championship.
