Lando Norris claimed a remarkable pole position for the 2024 United States Grand Prix, with his first effort in Q3 proving unbeatable after a session-ending crash by George Russell. This qualifying session, held at the Circuit of The Americas, was marked by intense competition and dramatic incidents.

Norris initially set a time of 1 minute 32.330 seconds in Q3, temporarily disrupting Max Verstappen‘s dominance from earlier qualifying sessions. Despite his slower second lap, Norris’s time remained unchallenged after Russell’s dramatic crash brought out double waved yellow flags, halting any further improvements. Fortunately, Russell emerged unharmed from the incident.

Max Verstappen, driving for Red Bull Racing, secured the second position, trailing Norris by just 0.031 seconds. Ferrari‘s Carlos Sainz clinched the third spot, ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc in fourth. McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five, with Russell’s earlier time placing him in sixth.

Pierre Gasly performed strongly for Alpine, securing seventh place, followed by Fernando Alonso for Aston Martin in eighth. Kevin Magnussen from Haas achieved ninth position, entering Q3 for the first time this season, while Sergio Perez of Red Bull was placed tenth after his initial lap was invalidated due to exceeding track limits.

Yuki Tsunoda narrowly missed out on the top ten, settling for 11th, with Haas’s Nico Hulkenberg facing elimination after experiencing difficulties on his final attempt. Further down, Esteban Ocon for Alpine, Lance Stroll for Aston Martin, and Liam Lawson for Red Bull faced elimination in Q2, with Lawson failing to set a time due to upcoming penalties.

In a surprising outcome, Lewis Hamilton could only manage 19th place after failing to better his lap time in Q1, hindered by a scruffy middle sector. Hamilton attributed part of his struggles to a suspected suspension failure sustained during the sprint race.

Also exiting in Q1 were the Williams drivers Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto, alongside the Kick Saubers of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu. Bottas experienced mechanical issues following a brake fire in the sprint event.

The United States Grand Prix weekend saw Verstappen extend his championship lead with a sprint race victory, yet Norris’s pole position later in the day disrupted his command. Sainz’s performance in both the sprint and qualifying underlined Ferrari’s competitiveness, despite Norris and McLaren stealing the spotlight in the qualifiers.

“It was a beautiful lap,” said Norris after clinching pole. “We’ve been on the back foot, so we had to do something special today. It’s a nice way to start the race tomorrow.”
