LeBron James Sidelined as Lakers Begin Training Camp

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — LeBron James, the star forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, is not participating in the start of the team’s training camp due to a glute injury that coach JJ Redick described as “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.” The Lakers are taking a cautious approach ahead of the regular season, which begins mid-October, prioritizing James’s long-term health over immediate gameplay.
At 41 years old, James is preparing for his 23rd NBA season, aiming to make history as the first player to hit that milestone. Redick stated that the plan is for James to recover in time for the Lakers’ matchup against the Golden State Warriors, though he might miss some of the six preseason games.
Redick noted, “It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him. Obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.” James previously struggled with injuries, particularly a foot issue that sidelined him last December. He participated in three out of six preseason games the previous year and expressed a desire to contribute more this season.
James emphasized the need for a gradual approach in a conversation with ESPN, stating, “I’m still ramping things back up. I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September.” His camp has advised the Lakers to be overly cautious to ensure he is fit for a possible playoff run.
The Lakers opened their training camp on October 3, 2023, with younger players stepping up in James’s absence. Redick mentioned that Austin Reaves has taken on a leadership role as the team works on chemistry and integrating new talent, including recent acquisition Kyrie Irving.
The absence of their leader raises questions about how well the team will mesh before opening night. Fans are hopeful that once James returns to form, he and teammate Anthony Davis will put the Lakers in contention for a championship.
The team expects to monitor James’s recovery closely, knowing that entering the upcoming season with a healthy roster is crucial for their championship aspirations. While fans express a mix of concern and support, the Lakers are committed to a strategy focused on preserving their star player while strengthening the overall team.
