Redick noted, “It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him. He participated in three out of six preseason games the previous year and expressed a desire to contribute more this season.

James emphasized the need for a gradual approach in a conversation with ESPN, stating, “I’m still ramping things back up. I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September.” His camp has advised the Lakers to be overly cautious to ensure he is fit for a possible playoff run.

The Lakers opened their training camp on October 3, 2023, with younger players stepping up in James’s absence. Redick mentioned that Austin Reaves has taken on a leadership role as the team works on chemistry and integrating new talent, including recent acquisition Kyrie Irving.
