Liam Hemsworth Takes On Geralt in The Witcher Season 4

LOS ANGELES, CA — Liam Hemsworth has officially stepped into the role of Geralt of Rivia in the fourth season of The Witcher, taking over from Henry Cavill. This significant transition comes as fans eagerly await the series’ new direction, set to premiere on Netflix on October 30.
As a long-time fan of the The Witcher video games, Hemsworth expressed his excitement about portraying a character he admired. “I’m a bit of a secret gamer,” Hemsworth shared in an interview. “I was such a big fan of this character, so it was a bit of those pinch-yourself moments.”
However, stepping into an established role came with its own pressures. “Initially, I was pretty hesitant and unsure,” he admitted. “It’s an odd thing to be asked to come in midway through a series like this and continue on as the lead character.” Hemsworth felt a mix of excitement and anxiety as he prepared to embody Geralt.
The showrunner, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, had no doubts about Hemsworth’s casting. “The very first time that I met with Liam, in my gut, I knew that he would make a perfect Geralt for us in Season 4,” Hissrich said, emphasizing his honesty and insight into the character.
In preparation for the role, Hemsworth relocated to London and embarked on months of training, including sword-fighting lessons. “Physical training pretty much started when I accepted the role,” he explained. “I got to London about three months before we started shooting, and then the sword fighting began.”
The production faced a delay due to the 2023 Writers Guild strike, but Hemsworth used that time to further enhance his skills. Hissrich noted the remarkable physical transformation Hemsworth underwent, stating, “He was enormous — the most fit man I’ve ever seen.”
His dedication impressed the crew, with stunt coordinator Marcus Shakesheff remarking, “The action comes very easy to him. He works hard. And he picks things up quickly.” Hemsworth’s new portrayal of Geralt blends physical prowess with a nuanced approach to the character’s complexity.
Hissrich highlighted that Hemsworth’s Geralt has a bit more humor and a different tone, stating, “We’ve brought cursing back.” This change signals a fresh take on the character while maintaining the heart of Geralt’s personality.
Moreover, a new scar on Geralt’s face symbolizes his struggles. “We made a definitive decision at the beginning of the season to start Liam with a scar across his face,” Hissrich explained, adding an element of depth to the character’s storyline.
Costume designer Lucinda Wright collaborated closely with Hemsworth to create a distinct look for Geralt, along with a signature white wig. “I feel like it forces you to walk a little differently and hold your head a little higher,” Hemsworth said of donning the character’s armor and look.
Behind the scenes, Hemsworth forged strong bonds with cast and crew, easing his transition into the ensemble. “Everyone was so welcoming,” he recalled. “They put a lot of my fears and nerves at ease.” During filming, co-stars praised his professionalism and dedication, emphasizing the teamwork that brought the character to life.
As Season 4 approaches, anticipation is high for Hemsworth’s interpretation of Geralt. “I’m just excited to continue on this journey,” he stated, hinting at the developments awaiting fans in upcoming episodes.
October 30 will mark a new beginning for The Witcher, as Hemsworth takes the audience on an adventure through a world filled with monsters and human challenges.
